Read Option is a zone run play out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex with 11 personnel, showing four receivers split wide (two to each side) and the QB reading the mesh point with the HB. The backfield diagram shows the classic option look: the offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme while the QB reads the crashing defensive end or edge defender to decide between handing off to the HB on the give path or pulling it and attacking the edge himself. This is a pure run play with no route combo attached, designed to force numbers advantages by making the defense honor both the dive and the keep.
Defensive Reads
Watch the read defender (usually the defensive end or edge rusher) pre-snap, this is the key man in the option look. Stacked boxes with 8 or more defenders near the line signal the defense is selling out to stop the run, so be ready to pull and use the edge lane. Man coverage on the perimeter can leave the QB keep lane exposed if the defense commits extra defenders inside. User-controlled defensive ends who sit and play the option correctly will shut this down, so mix your reads and do not become predictable with the give or keep decision. Blitzes off the edge from a nano-blitz package can disrupt the mesh point timing, so be ready to check the play at the line if you see extra rushers loading one side.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify whether the unblocked edge defender is crashing hard or sitting to play both options.
Use this play on early downs (1st or 2nd) in run-heavy situations to keep defenses honest and set up explosive plays later in the drive.
If the defense stacks the box to stop the run, pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set to punish overaggressive linebackers.
Manually control the QB on the read and practice the timing of the mesh point so you pull the ball only when the read defender commits to the HB.
Mix in HB Sweep and Inside Zone from this set to keep the defense guessing between inside and outside run threats out of the same formation.
