HB Counter out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard (and often a tackle or fullback substitute) to lead through the hole while the offensive line executes down blocks to seal the edge. The HB takes a counter step away from the play call before pressing back into the pulling lineman's lane, creating misdirection that punishes overaggressive linebackers and defensive ends selling hard upfield. This is a run play designed to beat aggressive fronts and gap-shooting defenders, with the primary read being the flow of the linebackers: if they bite on the initial counter step, cut inside behind the pullers, if they sit and read, bounce outside off the edge block.
Watch for linebacker flow before the snap. If both linebackers are stacked and aggressive, they will likely overrun the counter action and open a cutback lane. Identify the defensive end and outside linebacker assignment on the play side. If they are crashing hard down the line without containment discipline, the counter's edge block will seal them for a big gain. Look for a spy or a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hole. A disciplined user defender reading the pulling guard can blow up the timing before the HB reaches the line of scrimmage. Check for a run blitz or nano blitz look with extra defenders stacked in the box. Six or seven man fronts with fast flow can beat the counter if the pullers get met immediately at the point of attack. Against zone coverage shells with light boxes (nickel or dime personnel, five defenders in the box), this play has more room to operate since there are fewer bodies to read the counter action.
Use this play after establishing Inside Zone or HB Sweep so linebackers are conditioned to fly toward initial flow, then hit them with the counter misdirection to gash cutback lanes.
Call this on early downs or short yardage situations (1st and 10, 2nd and short) since the pulling linemen need a beat to develop and blitz-heavy 3rd down looks can blow up the play before it starts.
Pre-snap, check the defensive line spacing and linebacker depth. If you see a 3-4 look with linebackers stacked tight and crashing downhill on the snap, this play punishes that discipline hard.
Motion the flexed receiver or use a hot route to check the slot defender's alignment. If the slot corner or nickel is sitting in the box pre-snap, expect an extra run defender and consider bouncing outside on your cut.
Pair this play call with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant in the same drive to keep the defense guessing between run and pass reads out of similar formation looks, forcing linebackers to hesitate on the counter action.
