Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex sends all four eligible receivers vertical, with both outside receivers running straight seams up the sideline while the slot receiver and the inline TE push vertical seams through the middle of the field. The HB stays in to check block off the diagram, giving the QB a clean pocket to work through his reads. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress deep zone defenders by putting four verticals in the same window, and the primary read progresses from the field-side seam to the boundary seam, working outside-in based on the safety rotation.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safeties, this tells you immediately whether you are facing Cover 3 or Cover 2 shells that this play is designed to punish. Watch for corners playing off coverage at the snap, if they bail immediately into deep drops that confirms zone and you should trust your seam reads. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if both safeties stay deep and split the field it is Cover 2 and the outside seams will have room between the corner and safety. Be wary of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with extra deep defenders, since four verticals into four deep defenders removes natural throwing windows and forces contested catches. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field, as a smart user can jump the inside seam and bait a turnover if the QB does not check the far side route first.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split evenly it is likely Cover 2 and the seams between the corner and safety are your money throws.

Against Cover 3, target the deep middle seam runner since the single high safety cannot cover both inside verticals at once.

Hot route the HB into a checkdown or flat route if you expect pressure, since he is blocking by default and this gives you an escape valve against blitzes.

Use this play on early downs or obvious passing situations like 2nd and long to keep defenses honest, then follow it up with RPO Peek Slant or Slants Middle to attack defenders who start sitting on the verticals.

Pair this with PA Read or PA Dig in your play-calling sequence so linebackers respect the run fake and open up the vertical passing lanes even more.
