HB Quick Base is a downhill dive run out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex, designed to hit the interior gap quickly before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead at the point of attack with no pulling linemen, while the HB takes a quick handoff and cuts north-south behind the line. This is a pure run play with no route combos to read, so the primary progression is simply reading the initial double team and cutback lanes at the line of scrimmage rather than any receiver concept.

Defensive Reads

Look for stacked box fronts pre-snap since a heavy interior alignment signals the defense is sitting on the dive and may blow up the play at the mesh point. Watch linebacker depth: shallow, aggressive linebackers crashing downhill can be gashed with a quick cutback if the play side gap gets sealed. Man or man-blitz packages that pull safeties into the box are the biggest threat to this play since it eliminates cutback space and adds an extra tackler. Zone fronts with light boxes and safeties playing deep are ideal since the interior gap stays clean for the initial burst. If the defense shows a nano blitz look with defensive tackles crashing hard inside, expect the dive to get blown up unless the cutback lane opens on the backside.

Usage Tips

Use this in short yardage and third and one situations where a quick, decisive dive can pick up the sticks without exposing the ball to negative plays.

Check the defensive front pre-snap and if you see six or more in the box, consider audibling to HB Sweep or HB Counter from this same set to attack the edge instead.

Since there are no routes attached, pair this play in sequence with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the dive and a quick pass option.

User the fullback or lead blocker if available to seal the first defender showing in the hole, then trust the HB to read the natural cutback lane.

Run this early in a series to set up HB Mid Draw later, since both plays share the same initial mesh point look and can freeze linebackers who key run fits too aggressively.
