Breakdown

Mtn DBL Dig Swing lines up in Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex with 11 personnel and uses a jet motion man from the backfield across the formation before the snap to help identify man coverage. At the snap the two inside receivers run dig routes at different depths, crossing the field from opposite sides, while the outside receiver on the play side rockets vertically up the numbers and the backfield player releases on a swing route to the flat as a built in checkdown. The blocking is pass protection with the swing man releasing late, and this is a man beater concept that isolates linebackers on the crossing digs while giving the QB a layered progression from the vertical shot to the deep dig to the underneath dig, with the swing route as the safety valve.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebackers at the snap, if they run with the motion man across the field it confirms man coverage and the digs will have space underneath. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety means the vertical route on the outside can occupy him and open both digs behind the linebackers. Cover 3 zone drops can suffocate the digs if the flat defender sits and the middle linebacker gets depth quickly, forcing a checkdown to the swing route. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the deep middle or lurking the dig lanes, that signals a robber or Tampa 2 look designed to jump the crossing routes. Against a blitz, look for the swing man's blocker or lack thereof, unblocked edge rushers mean the ball needs to come out fast on the underneath dig or swing.

Usage Tips

Send the motion man across pre-snap to bait linebackers into following him, this instantly reveals man coverage if a defender mirrors the motion.

Use this on second and long or third and medium since the digs need time to develop and the swing route only bails you out for short yardage.

Hot route the swing man into a flat or check him down immediately against a hard blitz look since the deep routes take too long to develop.

Pair this with Mtn HB Swing or Mtn Fk Swing Wheel earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying the swing action, then hit the deep dig once linebackers cheat toward the flat.

Progress from the vertical shot route first to freeze deep safeties, then work to the far dig, then the near dig, and finally dump to the swing man if nothing opens.
