Breakdown

Corner Strike is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex with 11 personnel that attacks the sideline on both edges. To the right, the outside receiver runs a corner route into the boundary while the inside slot receiver runs a shallow drag into the flat, creating a natural high low stretch on any defender covering that flat zone. To the left, both receivers run deep outs breaking hard toward the sideline, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch away from the corner side. This is primarily a man beater thanks to the corner route winning over top of tight man coverage, but the flat and out combinations also give it enough zone beater value to attack cover 3 and cover 2 shells. The primary read starts with the corner route to the field side, then works down to the flat route underneath if the corner is capped by a deep defender.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep safety alignment before the snap, because a two high shell signals cover 2 or cover 4 and tells you the corner route will have help over the top. Watch the flat defender on the corner side at the snap, since if he widens with the underneath route it opens up a throwing lane for the corner route behind him. Key the cornerback's press or off alignment on the corner route side, because press man with no safety help is the exact matchup this play is designed to exploit. Look for a user controlled defender sinking into a deep third or lurking in the flat, since a savvy user can jump the corner route or squat on the underneath crossing route and bait a turnover. Identify blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge, because a nano blitz can collapse the pocket before the corner route has time to develop, forcing you into the quicker flat and out reads instead.

Usage Tips

Check the corner before the snap and see if the defense is showing a two deep safety shell, because a single high safety leaves the corner route on an island against man coverage.

Use the corner route as your first read on any down and distance where you need an explosive play, especially third and long or second and long shots off play action tendencies from earlier in the drive.

If you see the cornerback aligned tight with no safety help over the top, throw the corner route with anticipation before he can get depth on his drop.

Combine Corner Strike with Slot Out or Quick Slants earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping underneath routes, then hit the corner route deep once you have that tendency established.

Hot route the backside out route into a deeper comeback if you are facing heavy cover 2 zone drops, since the shallow out can get swallowed by an underneath zone defender sitting in that area.
