Breakdown

Corner Strike out of Shotgun Spread Dbl Flex is a four-verticals-style man beater built around a corner route on the right side paired with two crossing patterns on the left. The right receiver breaks outside on a corner route while his flexed partner runs an out to the flat underneath it, creating a natural high-low stretch on that side. On the left, both receivers cross and stem outward, using their initial paths to rub off man defenders before separating vertically to the sideline. The primary read starts with the outside corner route on the right, then works to the left side crossers if the corner is capped by a deep defender.

Defensive Reads

Identify the deep safety alignment before the snap since a single-high shell leaves the corner route on the right isolated on the outside cornerback. Watch the flat defender on the right side post-snap, if he sinks with the corner route instead of sitting on the flat route, that opens an easy underneath completion. On the left side, key the underneath linebackers and nickel defender to see if they trail the crossers in man or sit in zone drops, which tells you whether to expect separation or a jam at the top of the route. Cover 3 with a deep third defender rolling to the corner side is the biggest threat to shut this play down since it takes away the primary vertical read. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the middle of the field who can jump the crossing routes on the left if the quarterback holds the ball too long looking right.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check for single-high safety looks since the corner route on the right thrives when there is no help over the top. Against man coverage, trust the crossing action on the left to create natural rubs and separation, especially versus press corners without safety help. Use motion or a hot route to slide the flat route on the right into a quicker option if the defense shows Cover 2 with a hard flat defender sitting underneath the corner. This play works best on second and long or third and long when you need to attack vertically and force the defense to defend both levels. Pair Corner Strike with Mtn Fades H-Choice or Deep Curl in the same set to keep defenses guessing between vertical shots and comeback breaks off similar initial releases.
