Split Y Off Close is a condensed 11 personnel look out of Shotgun that pulls the tight end off the ball and tucks him inside the numbers next to the formation, with the back offset and the outside receivers split wide. The "Close" part matters: because the slot and the off tight end are tightened toward the tackles, defenses have to declare early whether they are matching inside or bracketing outside. That compression is what separates this set from spread-out Shotgun sets in the same formation, where the slot alignment forces defenses into obvious apex leverage. Here you get natural rub and crossing angles from bodies already stacked in the box, plus a legitimate two-way run threat because the off tight end can lead into either A gap or seal the edge on Outside Zone Lt.
The play list leans into that duality. Outside Zone Lt, Mtn Inside Zone, and Spinner HB Zone give you a full inside/outside zone package from the same alignment, so your run tendencies stay hidden. Then Portland HB Angle, Mtn PA HB Swing, and Mtn Cross Screen weaponize the back against linebackers who crash the run fit. Because the tight end and slot start compressed, the crossers in Mesh Spot Rails and Smash Spot arrive with built-in traffic, which is exactly what beats man coverage in Madden without needing a single hot route.
Personnel-wise, this is where you isolate your best route runner outside. With the tight end and slot pulling both hook defenders and the apex inside, your X gets a true one-on-one on the boundary against whichever corner the defense leaves alone. Against zone, PA Spinner Post Flood and Dig Slot Out attack the same third with multiple levels, which is the fastest way to make a user-controlled defender wrong. The Gadget and Power HB tags tell you the intent: this is a set built for backs who catch and run, not just a pass-first shell.
Read the apex defender pre-snap. If he widens to the compressed slot, hand it off with Mtn Inside Zone or Spinner HB Zone. If he tightens into the box, throw Dig Slot Out behind him.
On third and medium against man, go straight to Portland HB Angle or Mesh Spot Rails and let the compressed traffic create separation instead of forcing a hot route.
Against single high zone, PA Spinner Post Flood is your primary answer. Read the flat defender first, then work up to the post if he sinks.
Hot route the isolated X to a streak or fade when you see off man on the boundary, since the inside concepts pull every underneath defender away from him.
Establish Outside Zone Lt early so linebackers commit to run fit, then run Mtn PA HB Swing and Mtn Cross Screen off that same look to catch overpursuit.
Motion the compressed slot pre-snap to confirm man or zone before committing to a crosser heavy concept.
