Double Stack takes the standard 11 personnel Shotgun look and removes the traditional split alignment entirely, placing two receivers stacked on each side of the formation with the back offset next to the quarterback. Unlike Shotgun sets that spread receivers wide and force isolated one on one matchups, Double Stack piles bodies vertically at the numbers so the defense has to declare its coverage rules pre-snap. Man coverage defenders get caught in traffic immediately off the snap because the point man in each stack functions as a legal rub, and Madden's man logic does not handle stacked releases cleanly. That alone makes this set one of the more reliable man beaters in the game without needing a single hot route.
The personnel is 11 (1 RB 1 TE), but the tight end is deployed as a stack receiver rather than an inline blocker, which means you get a bigger body working short area routes against nickel and dime defenders. That is the matchup advantage: your TE catch radius against a slot corner or a smaller safety on drive routes, slot outs, and spot concepts. Meanwhile the outside stack receiver gets a free release on verticals and smash concepts because the defensive back cannot press through the stack alignment.
Play art here leans heavily into RPO and screen game concepts, which is why the set carries the Gadget tag. RPO Alert Screen, RPO Alert Trap, RPO Zone Alert Screen, RPO Trap Alert Screen, and RPO Read FL Screen all let you read a box defender and dump the stack into a numbers advantage in the flat. Layer in Empty Bubble Screen, Empty Fk Bubble Post, WR Mid Screen, Smoke N Go, and Fake Screen Go and you have a complete screen and play-action shell built off the same alignment. HB Draw, HB Slip Screen, and PA Jailbreak Screen give you the constraint plays that punish aggressive user defenders who start flying at the stacks.
Read the cornerback alignment pre-snap: if both stacks draw man leverage with no safety help over the top, go straight to Mtn Shallow Cross or Stack Out and let the rub do the work
On the RPO plays, count the box defenders before the snap, and if the defense has six or more in the box take the stack screen every time instead of forcing HB Draw into a loaded front
Use Empty Bubble Screen and WR Mid Screen early to bait user defenders into flying downhill, then come back with Smoke N Go or Fake Screen Go on the same drive for the explosive shot
Against single high Cover 3 or Cover 1, Four Verticals with the seam runner hot routed or the outside stack receiver left on the vertical stresses the deep middle defender, especially if you motion one stack receiver to widen the coverage
In third and medium, Curl Flat and Mtn Drive Slot Out give you two reliable sticks concepts with the TE working the intermediate area against slower nickel defenders, and you can hot route the back to a flat or block based on the blitz look
