The running back stays in the backfield on a delayed handoff, letting the play action develop before hitting the hole once the defensive line has committed upfield on pass rush angles. This is a base run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush and overzealous linebacker blitzes, not a man or zone beater in the route sense since there are no true pass concepts attached.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check linebacker depth: if they are stacked tight to the line showing blitz intent, HB Draw hits big. Look at defensive end alignment, wide upfield rushers open bigger draw lanes than defenders playing contain. Post snap, identify any user controlled defender spying the quarterback or sitting in the backfield, since a disciplined spy or lurk defender kills this play instantly. Zone coverages with linebackers reading run-pass will close the draw lane fast, so this is more effective against man coverage blitzes. Watch for delayed blitzers or nano blitz packages that shoot gaps immediately, since a well timed A gap blitz can blow up the draw before the back gets the ball.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in second and long situations when the defense shows blitz or an obvious pass rush look off the edges.
Watch for defensive ends and linebackers crashing hard off the snap, that aggressive pursuit is exactly what HB Draw exploits.
Use the double stack alignment to your advantage by motioning a stack receiver pre snap to check if the defense is in man, since a man shell often means fewer defenders reading the backfield.
Pair this play with Four Verticals or Fake Screen Go from the same set so the defense has to respect the deep pass threat before you dial up the draw.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at depth and read the mesh point, since they will fill downhill quickly.
