Smoke N Go is a quick-hitting man beater built off a bunch stack alignment in the Shotgun Double Stack set, designed to attack aggressive corners jumping the smoke route with a double move underneath. The outside receiver runs a hitch or smoke route to sell the quick throw while the stacked receiver behind him releases vertically on a go route, creating a natural pick and rub against man coverage. Your primary read starts with the smoke route on the outside for an instant answer against blitz or press, then progresses to the go route up the seam if the corner bites or if you see single high safety rotation pre-snap.
Watch the corner over the stack pre-snap, if he is in press man alignment he is a prime candidate to bite on the smoke route and get beat over the top by the go. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high tells you there is more room to attack the seam once the go route clears the underneath traffic. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting in the flat or lurking near the stack, since a smart user can rob the smoke throw and force you into a tougher read on the go. Check linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers dropping into underneath zones can undercut the smoke route and bait a risky throw if you are not patient with your progression. Against zone coverage or a cover 3 shell, expect the corner to sink and the smoke throw to get contested, so be ready to climb the pocket and target the go route in the void behind the flat defender.
Use pre-snap motion or a peek at the corner alignment to see if he is playing press man, since this play is designed to punish aggressive jump routes on the smoke concept.
If you see two high safeties and soft corners sitting on the smoke, hold the ball an extra beat and let the go route clear for a big chunk play down the seam.
Hot route the underneath checkdown or drag on the backside if you diagnose zone coverage, since the go and smoke combo loses value against a true zone beater look.
Pair this play with RPO Alert Screen or WR Mid Screen earlier in a drive to condition the defense into keying the same bunch stack look, then hit them with the go route when they start jumping the smoke.
Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenders are more likely to sell out on the underneath route, giving you the explosive play off the double move.
