Mtn Drive Slot Out is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Double Stack formation with 11 personnel, designed to attack linebacker leverage over the middle while giving you a quick outlet to the boundary. The drive concept sends one receiver underneath on a crossing route while a second receiver runs a deeper in-breaking route behind it, creating a natural rub against man defenders, and the slot receiver kicks out on a quick out route to beat off-man or hard corners on the perimeter. Your primary read starts with the drive route working across the field for a rhythm throw, then progresses to the slot out if the underneath defenders sit and take away the crosser.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the slot corner is playing press or off man, since press coverage on the drive route gives your receiver an immediate rub advantage while off coverage favors the quick slot out throw. Watch the safety shell after the snap, a two high look usually means the underneath crosser has room to work before the safety can rotate down, while a single high safety rotating hard to the drive concept side signals a shell rolling into robber or Tampa 2 coverage. Key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he sits in a hook zone or bites on the drive motion he will collapse the throwing window for the crosser, forcing you to progress to the slot out. This play struggles against aggressive zone blitz packages where the slot corner drops into an underneath zone, since that defender can undercut the out route before the ball arrives. Watch for a nano blitz off the edge since the drive concept holds the quarterback in the pocket longer, making him vulnerable to user pressure if the offensive line does not get an early chip or hot route protection call.

Usage Tips

Check the slot corner alignment before the snap, if he is playing outside leverage or off man the slot out becomes an easy pitch and catch throw for positive yardage. Use the drive route as your first read against man coverage since the natural rub from the stack alignment creates instant separation from trailing defenders. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick hitch or slant if you diagnose zone coverage, since the drive concept loses value against zone drops that sit in the underneath windows. Call this play on second and medium or third and short situations where the slot out gives you a high percentage completion to move the chains without needing to push the ball deep.
