Overview

Varsity Double is a 33 play situational playsheet that lives entirely in Shotgun. Every snap comes from one formation family spread across four sets, all out of 11 personnel (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR), which makes this one of the most concentrated offensive franchise playsheets in the game while still being larger than 63% of the 42 offensive franchise books available. There is no under center package, no heavy set, and no reason to ever break tendency: you line up in the gun, you read the front, and you go.

The concept list tells you exactly what the playsheet wants to be. RPO and Read Option tags sit next to Inside Zone and Zone Run, so the run game and the quick passing game are married to the same pre-snap look. Stick and Stick Concept give you the short man beater and the underneath answer against pressure, while Double Posts and the Cover 2 Beater tag supply the vertical punish when a defense sits in two high shells. Motion plays are built in, letting you shift a receiver across the formation to diagnose man versus zone before the ball is snapped instead of guessing post snap. A sample play like 0 1 Trap shows the interior run element is real and not window dressing.

Choosing Varsity Double over a multi formation book means trading disguise for repetition and speed. Because all 33 plays come out of Shotgun and one personnel grouping, you never sub, never lose a play clock to formation changes, and your audible package can be built so tightly that every call is one flick away. That is a real edge in competitive play where hesitation at the line costs you more than predictability does, and it is exactly what a franchise playsheet built around 11 personnel RPO football is supposed to deliver.

Scheme Fit

Varsity Double wants a mobile quarterback with a reliable throw on the move, since RPO and Read Option tags out of 100% Shotgun only threaten a defense if the quarterback is a real pull and keep option. Around him you need a one cut zone runner who can hit the Inside Zone and Trap creases from a deep alignment, a receiving tight end who can win the stick window, and at least one deep speed receiver to make Double Posts and the Cover 2 Beater legitimate. This is the playsheet for the 11 personnel purist who plays fast, calls from an audible screen, and would rather out execute an opponent from one formation than out disguise him from six.

Strengths

  • Total Shotgun concentration (33 of 33 plays) means your pre snap look never changes, so RPO, Inside Zone, Stick and Double Posts all come off an identical picture and the defense cannot tell run from pass by formation alone.
  • RPO and Read Option tags out of a 100% gun book let you keep the defensive end unblocked by design on run downs, a conflict a heavy under center playsheet cannot create on every snap.
  • Built in Motion plays give you free man versus zone reads from the only formation you run, so you can shift a receiver, read the corner's reaction, and go to Stick against man or Double Posts against a two high shell.
  • Four sets under one formation with one personnel group (11) means zero substitution lag and an audible package where all four sets are reachable without burning play clock, ideal for hurry up and no huddle tempo.
  • The Cover 2 Beater and Double Posts tags give this playsheet a real vertical answer, so opponents who sit in Cover 2 to squeeze the Stick concept and the zone run game get punished deep down the middle.

Weaknesses

  • Zero under center or heavy formations across all 33 plays, so short yardage, goal line and four minute clock killing situations force you to run Inside Zone and Trap from the gun with a deeper mesh point and less downhill force.
  • One formation and one personnel group make you completely readable to a user who has played you once: they know you are in Shotgun 11 every snap and can set their front and coverage shell accordingly without ever guessing at a sub.
  • The concept list is narrow (Stick, Post, Double Posts, Inside Zone, Read Option, Trap), so a defender who takes away the stick window and caps the posts has covered most of what this playsheet offers.
  • No fullback or extra tight end look means pass protection help is limited to the back and the single tight end, leaving you exposed to overload and nano style pressure with no formation based answer.
  • With only four sets, motion and hot routes carry the entire disguise burden, and a user who reads your motion tells will diagnose plays before the snap.

Usage Tips

Build your entire audible package out of the four Shotgun sets, mapping the Inside Zone and Read Option calls, the Stick Concept, and the Double Posts shot into one screen so you can change plays without changing formation on any down.

Lean on RPO and Read Option on second and medium, using the run read to punish a defense that drops a safety and the pass tag to punish one that crashes the end.

Save Double Posts and the Cover 2 Beater for third and long or after two straight zone runs, when the defense has committed a safety down and the middle of the field opens up.

Use the Motion plays on first down as a free coverage diagnostic, then come back to Stick against man and the zone run game against soft zone with the same Shotgun look.

Because there is no heavy package, treat short yardage as a Trap and Inside Zone situation only and hot route the tight end to a block to manufacture the extra body the playsheet does not give you.
