Mtn Spinner HB Counter is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that uses a spin action mesh with the quarterback and running back to disguise the counter direction before the ball is handed off. The offensive line pulls the backside guard and tackle to lead block, creating a misdirection scheme that punishes overaggressive linebackers and defensive linemen flowing hard to the initial fake. The primary read progression starts with the pulling lead blockers, hitting the hole once the puller clears the point of attack, with a cutback lane as the backup option if the alley gets clogged.
Key the backside linebacker and defensive end flow, if they crash hard toward the initial spin fake the counter lane to the opposite side will be wide open. Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high shell with linebackers reading run aggressively is the ideal look for this counter to hit big. Identify blitz packages before the snap, a five or six man pressure look can beat the pullers to the point of attack and blow up the play behind the line of scrimmage. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the backfield instead of biting on the spin action, since a disciplined user rush will sit and read the counter path. Look for scrape exchange technique from linebackers, if the defense is well drilled against counter action they will replace gaps quickly and force a tougher cutback read.
Run this out of neutral personnel looks so linebackers cannot key run before the snap based on formation tendencies.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow and flowing hard on run fits this counter action will freeze them and open the cutback lane.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest after establishing inside zone or HB Toss from the same set.
Pair this with Mtn PA Spinner and Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle since they share the same spin mesh action, forcing linebackers to respect play action off the identical backfield movement.
Avoid calling this against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge before the pullers can get set, since the counter needs time to develop.
User the backside defensive end or linebacker yourself if you are worried about penetration blowing up the counter path before the puller arrives.
