HB Sweep Wk is a weak side outside run out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off, pulling the backside guard and using the fullback or TE as a lead blocker to seal the edge away from the strength of the formation. The line executes a stretch reach scheme, blocking down while the playside tackle and TE work to gain leverage on the edge defender, giving the HB a clear alley if the defense flows too hard to the strong side. Primary read progression is a one-cut decision: hit the edge if the alley is sealed, or cut back inside if the defensive end crashes and the linebackers overpursue to the strong side.

Defensive Reads

Check the weak side defensive end alignment before the snap since a wide 9 technique closes the sweep lane immediately. Watch linebacker depth and flow: if the mike and will linebackers key run fast and flow hard to the play side edge, look for the cutback lane behind the pulling guard. Man coverage with aggressive user blitzers off the edge is the biggest threat since a free hitter can beat the pulling blocker to the point of attack before the seal is set.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run-heavy personnel count to disguise the weak side flow since defenses often key strong side motion or trips alignment. Check the defensive front pre snap: if you see the defensive line shaded strong or the weak side end squeezed inside, this play has a wider running lane. Use it on early downs, first and 10 or second and short, to keep defenses honest against your RPO and play action packages in this set. Pair it with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle or Mtn Spinner HB Counter later in a drive so the defense has to respect both the sweep look and the counter action off similar motion. Against aggressive fronts that crash hard playside, be ready to plant and cut back since the backside cutback lane opens fast when linebackers flow too far. If the defense stacks the box with extra run defenders, motion out of this look into RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Peek Slant from the same formation to force a numbers conflict.
