Corner Strike is a man beater out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that attacks the boundary with a corner route as the primary progression, paired with an underneath crosser and a checkdown option to the flat. The concept is designed to isolate a cornerback on an island and win with a high point throw to the corner route once the receiver stems inside and breaks outside toward the sideline. Your primary read is the corner route first, working to the crossing route if the safety rotates over the top, then checking down to the flare or drag route if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Check the corner pre-snap for outside leverage and bail technique, which signals zone coverage and an easier throwing window on the corner route. Watch the free safety at the snap since Cover 3 rotation will vacate the deep outside third and open the corner route for a big gain. If you see Cover 4 or Cover 2 with two deep safeties, the corner route will be contested so prioritize the crosser or checkdown instead. Key the flat defender's depth because if he sinks too deep chasing the corner route, the crossing route behind him becomes wide open. User the deep third defender if you are on defense to bait the quarterback into throwing the corner route into a trap coverage look.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the corner route thrives against Cover 3 and Cover 1 where the flat defender has no help over the top.

Motion your slot receiver or use a hot route to create a natural rub against man coverage if you see man alignment with tight press corners.

This play hits best on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense expects a shorter route combo and sits back in zone.

Combine this with Mtn Stick or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series to condition the defense to cheat toward underneath routes, then hit them with Corner Strike when they bite on the shorter stuff.
