RPO Zone Y Peek pairs an inside zone run with a peek route from the Y (tight end) as the quarterback's pre-determined RPO read. The offensive line blocks zone run schematics while the QB reads the second level defender assigned to the Y, handing the ball off if that defender crashes down on the run and pulling to throw the peek if he widens or drops into a passing lane. This is a run-first RPO built to punish linebackers who key the mesh point too aggressively, and it also functions as a light zone beater since the peek route exploits vacated middle-of-field zones.

Defensive Reads

Identify the second level defender over the Y tight end before the snap since he is the entire conflict defender for this RPO read. Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, a linebacker sitting shallow and crashing hard on run action is a green light to throw the peek immediately. Check safety alignment for two high shells versus single high, two high shells tend to leave the peek window open longer since underneath defenders have more run responsibility. Beware disguised blitzes where the Mike or Sam linebacker shows blitz then drops into the peek lane late, this can bait a bad throw if you are not patient with your eyes. Man coverage with press corners and no underneath help is the toughest shell to attack with the peek, favor the run or your hot routed backside receiver in that look instead.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the second level linebacker depth to decide if you want to snap into the run or lean pass before the ball is even snapped.

Against base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers sitting tight to the box, trust the zone hand off since those defenders are more likely to crash and free up the running lane.

Against nickel or dime packages with linebackers bailing into zone drops, key the Y peek immediately since the middle of the field opens up fast.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you an extra answer beyond the built in RPO read.

Sequence this play with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Alert Bubble earlier in a drive so linebackers hesitate on run fits, then punish that hesitation later with Mid Zone or Inside Zone for a bigger gain.
