RPO Glance Slant is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that pairs an inside handoff look with a quick slant and glance combo to the left. The offensive line executes run blocking to sell the ground scheme while the backside receiver runs a slant and the tight end works an underneath glance route, giving the quarterback a pre snap and post snap decision based on the alignment of the second level defenders. The lone receiver to the right runs a deep comeback breaking route that clears out space and holds the corner, functioning as a field stretcher rather than a primary target. The primary read progression is run key first, then glance to slant if a linebacker or slot defender widens or bites on the run action.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the box expecting run, this play is designed to beat that aggression with the quick glance and slant. Identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high indicates more run support in the box which favors the pass option side of this RPO. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flowing hard downhill on the run fake, that vacated area is exactly where the glance route sits for the quarterback's easy read. This play struggles against disciplined zone defenders who stay square and do not bite on the run action, since that closes the window for both the slant and glance. Man coverage with a physical corner on the comeback route can disrupt timing on that route, but it rarely affects the underneath glance and slant combo which is the true focus of this concept.

Usage Tips

Pre snap, count the box defenders and if the defense shows six or more in the box, lean toward pulling the ball and throwing the glance or slant immediately instead of handing it off.

Use the right side comeback route as a clear out tool against man coverage, since it drags the corner deep and opens throwing lanes underneath for the slant.

Against zone shells, key the flow of the linebackers, if they step up hard to the line on the run fake, the glance route will sit in the vacated window for an easy pitch and catch.
