Jet HB Trap is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that uses jet motion across the formation to freeze the defense before handing the ball off on a trap scheme up front. The offensive line pulls a blocker to trap the first defender inside the tackle box, creating a natural running lane while the jet motion man either carries out the fake or serves as an extra lead blocker depending on your read. The primary read progression starts with the trap blocker at the point of attack, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the defensive tackle crashes down too hard on the trap.
Watch the middle linebacker depth and flow at the snap since fast flow toward jet motion opens the cutback lane behind the trap block. Identify whether the defensive tackle is a read player or an attack player, since attack tackles get trapped easily while read players can blow up the play in the backfield. Check safety alignment pre-snap for run blitzes or eight man fronts, which can outnumber the trap scheme and force a cutback read instead of hitting the called hole downhill. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the trap lane or crashing down hard off the edge, since a well-timed user blitz can beat the trap blocker before he sets his angle. This play struggles against gap-sound 4-3 fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay home instead of following jet motion, so mix in play action from this set if the defense stops respecting the run fake.
Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the fake, then check if the defense shifts its run fits toward the motion before the snap.
Look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box since the trap scheme struggles against stacked fronts with extra run support.
If the defense shows an aggressive 3-technique or crashing defensive tackle, trust the trap block to seal him and stick with the called hole instead of bouncing outside.
Pair this play with Jet Inside Zone and Zone Fake Jet earlier in a drive so the defense starts keying jet motion as a run threat, then hit them with Jet Touch Pass or PA Jet Sweep off the same look to punish overaggressive linebackers.
Run this on early downs in normal or run-heavy personnel situations where you want positive yardage before setting up play action shots like Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam or Fake Jet HB Wheel.
