Breakdown

Vert Comebacks lines up out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off with 11 personnel and attacks the defense on all three levels. Both outside receivers push vertical up the numbers before snapping their routes back down at roughly 12-15 yards for comeback breaks, the TE releases across the formation on a shallow drag underneath, and the slot runs a quick pivot back to the QB near the line of scrimmage. The protection keeps the RB in to block, giving the QB a clean pocket to work his read from outside comeback to the underneath drag as a zone beater against soft corners and off coverage.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner depth at the snap, if they backpedal and open their hips early you can user the comeback receiver and drive on the break for a pick six opportunity. Watch the flat defender and underneath linebackers since a lurking Mike or Sam can jump the TE drag route if he sits and reads the QB's eyes. Cover 3 with a deep half safety cheating outside numbers will bracket the comeback route, so check the opposite side comeback if one corner is clearly shaded to help. Press man coverage with no safety help over the top is the best answer against this play since it disrupts the vertical stem before the comeback break can develop. Blitz packages that bring six or more can beat this play if the RB whiffs in protection, so track the A-gap and B-gap defenders post-snap to see if extra protection or a quick check down is needed.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are playing off or press since the comeback routes need cushion to work, so this play shines against Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with soft corners. If you see press man, hot route the outside receivers to a fade or slant instead of relying on the comeback break. Use the TE drag as your hot read versus a blitz look because it clears the shallow zone fast and gets the ball out before pressure arrives. This is best called on second or third and medium, roughly 5 to 8 yards, where the comeback depth naturally matches the sticks. Pair this with Four Verticals and Curl Combo in the same set so defenses cannot sit on the comeback break, forcing them to respect the vertical stem every time you break the huddle.
