Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that opens with jet motion across the backfield to freeze linebackers before the QB fakes the handoff. Based on the diagram, the play uses a single route: a receiver runs a shallow drag across the formation that bends upfield into a deep out or corner breaking route toward the sideline. The blocking picture shows the offensive line holding protection at the snap while the play design sells outside zone action, making this a run-pass conflict shot designed to hit the flood zone vacated by run fits. Primary read is the one route shown, working from the shallow crossing stem into the vertical breakoff route once the defender bites on the play-action fake.
Watch the linebacker level pre-snap and at the snap: if they crash hard toward the run fake and bite on the jet motion, the flat and out breaking route will be wide open behind them. Key the flat defender or curl to flat zone player in zone coverage shells, since a disciplined defender staying home on the sideline route shuts down the shot. Man coverage with underneath help can undercut the shallow drag portion of the route, so watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the throwing lane. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells that keep outside cornerbacks deep will squeeze the vertical break, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer and risk pressure. A disciplined defense that does not sell out on run action or send extra run support defenders neutralizes this play, so save it for opponents who have shown aggressive run blitz or run fit tendencies earlier in the game.
Use the jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back to follow the motion man, since that confirms man coverage and tells you the underneath area will be softer. This play hits hardest against teams that key run fits aggressively off jet sweep tendencies, so mix it in after you have shown real Jet Inside Zone or PA Jet Sweep a few times to sell the fake. Best called on early downs like first and ten or second and short where defenses are more willing to crash down on the run action. If the defense shows two high safeties and does not bite on the fake, be ready to check down or throw the drag route underneath since the deep break may be covered. Pair this with RPO Zone Peek or Read Option in the same set to keep the defense guessing between run and pass off identical jet motion looks.
