Breakdown

0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off is a trap run concept built to punish aggressive defensive fronts that crash hard upfield or key on outside zone flow. The offensive line pulls a blocker across the formation to trap the first crashing defender, opening a running lane through the interior of the front side of the play. This is a run play with no pass option, so the primary read is on the HB: identify the trap block, press the line of scrimmage, and decide whether to stick with the designed A or B gap or bounce off the trap block edge if the second level flows too fast.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles and edge defenders crashing hard upfield on the snap, since that penetration is exactly what the trap block is designed to exploit for a big cutback lane. Check linebacker depth before the snap, if the mike and will are sitting shallow and flowing fast to the play side, the trap block can seal them out and create a lane on the backside. This run struggles against disciplined gap control defenses that stay square and read blocks instead of shooting gaps, so if the defensive line is playing read technique rather than penetrating, expect the trap block to whiff and the HB to get stood up. A defense in a 46 front or heavy blitz look with linebackers stacked tight to the line can blow this play up before the trap block develops, so respect any pre-snap overload to one side of the formation. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender flying downhill unblocked, since that is usually the signal to cut the run away from the trap side immediately rather than trying to force it back inside.

Usage Tips

Call this play against defenses that show aggressive gap shooting linebackers or a light box count with only six or fewer defenders in the box. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait defensive tackles into shooting gaps upfield, since the trap block relies on that initial penetration to create the cutback lane. Pair 0 1 Trap with Mid Zone and Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense keys zone flow, then hit them with the trap action to freeze linebackers who are stepping laterally instead of downhill. This play hits best on early downs, first and ten or second and short, when defenses are not yet loaded up for a stop. Avoid calling it into stacked boxes with eight defenders or when facing a defense that is clearly sitting on inside runs after a heavy diet of zone calls, since there is no RPO or play-action bailout attached to this concept.
