Defensive Reads

User the underneath linebacker or nickel defender to sit in the throwing lane of the first slant read, this take away forces the quarterback to hesitate and eat a sack on a well timed blitz. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender crashing down on the slants will disrupt the timing, so disguise a sky or cloud rotation post snap to bait the quarterback into an early throw. Get this play out fast because it is designed to hit in under two seconds against man coverage, so do not hold the ball waiting for the deep crosser to develop.

Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like cornerbacks lined up tight on the receivers with no safety help showing over the top of the slants.

Hot route the outside slant receiver into a speed out if you diagnose Cover 2 or Cover 4 since the corner will sit low and jump the inside breaking route.

Pair this with Mtn Stick or Curl Combo in the same set to keep defenses honest between quick horizontal breaks and hitch based reads, forcing linebackers to respect multiple leverage points.

Best used on first and second down in obvious passing situations where defenses are more likely to disguise man coverage looks pre-snap.
