Verts Out from Shotgun Doubles Y Off aligns two receivers to the left running vertical seams while the slot receiver on that side releases up the middle before breaking into a vertical route as well, stacking the middle of the field with three vertical stems. On the right side the isolated receiver runs an out route, breaking hard to the sideline for an easy sideline pitch and catch. This is a four verticals variant built as both a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read progression going from the deep safety shell to the out route as the first hot option against soft coverage, then climbing into the seam or vert routes if the safeties bite or vacate the middle.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, since two deep safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 while a single deep safety signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch the flat defender on the out route side post snap, since if he sinks too deep the out route sits wide open in the void underneath. Key the deep middle safety in Cover 3 looks, because he has to choose between the trips side seam and the vert, and whichever one he leaves open is your throw. User controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle zone can rob the seam route, so if you see a user lurking there, reset your eyes to the out route or the outside vert instead. This concept struggles against aggressive man press coverage with underneath help, particularly Cover 1 robber looks, since the extra defender in the middle of the field can undercut both the seam and vert routes simultaneously.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the safeties are showing a two high shell or rotating to single high, since this dictates whether you attack the seams or take the out route early.

Against Cover 2, target the out route immediately before the flat defender can widen and close the throwing window on the boundary.

Against Cover 3, work the deep seam route on the trips side since the flat to seam defender has to choose between the out and the seam, creating a natural conflict read.

Use the out route as your checkdown on quick throws in third and short situations, and trust the verts on third and long when you need to stress the defense vertically.

Pair this play with Mesh Outs or Slants earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect short combo routes, then hit Verts Out to punish linebackers and safeties for sitting on shallow zones.
