Read Option out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off is a zone read run play with the QB and HB mesh point positioned directly behind the play side guard. The diagram shows the QB reading the backside defensive end while the HB path cuts hard opposite the QB keeper lane, with the offensive line executing an inside zone blocking scheme that flows to the play side. This is a base run play designed to attack light boxes and beats defenses that crash hard on the handoff read without discipline, with the primary read progression being the QB keying the unblocked edge defender to decide give or keep.
Key the defensive end assigned to the read side, if the CPU or user defender crashes hard on the HB every time, jump the keep lane with a spy or scrape exchange linebacker. Watch for a linebacker cheating downhill pre-snap, that signals the defense is selling out to stop the give and daring the QB to keep. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers leaves the alley grounded, so play the mesh point straight up and let pursuit clean up the keeper. Zone shells with two deep safeties will often have the play side safety fill the alley late, so a user controlled safety flowing downhill fast is the biggest threat to shut this down. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can beat the QB read entirely, so identify pre-snap if the front is overloaded to one side and consider an audible instead of forcing the zone read.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer in the box since the zone read scheme gets outnumbered against heavy fronts.
Watch the play side defensive end during the mesh point, if he sits or crashes down on the HB, pull it and get to the edge with the QB for an explosit gain.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage to stay ahead of the chains without tipping pass intent.
Pair Read Option with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Zone Peek from this same set so the defense has to respect both the run fit and the quick game off identical formation and personnel.
Sequence Read Option with Zone Fake Jet and Jet Inside Zone to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction since all three plays share the same shotgun alignment and mesh point look.
