Mtn Orbit WR Option comes out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off with orbit motion sweeping across the backfield before the snap. Off the diagram, the motion man releases into a shallow option route that can settle in or break outward, another receiver runs a horizontal drag underneath while a third stems inside and cuts flat toward the sideline, and the near receiver sits shallow as a checkdown option. This is a quick-game man beater built on natural rub and pick action from the motion, with the primary read starting on the option route runner working across the field before checking down to the flat and drag concepts underneath.
Pre-snap, identify whether a linebacker or defensive back shadows the orbit motion man, this confirms man coverage and tells you the option route is the primary target. Check safety depth before the snap, two deep safeties suggest zone coverage underneath which favors the drag and flat routes over the option route. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the drag route, this is the biggest threat to jump the underneath crossers. Look for corners playing outside leverage on the near receiver, aggressive outside technique invites the option route to break inside for an easy completion. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge open up the quick option and flat routes since there are fewer defenders to cover the shallow area.
Trigger the orbit motion pre-snap and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are facing man coverage and the option route becomes your first read.
Use this play on early downs or third and short since the option route and flat combo are designed to pick up easy yards after the catch against man or zone.
Hot route the option route runner to break outside against aggressive man corners who try to jump the inside cut, or leave it as is against zone to let him settle in the soft spot.
Pair this play with Slot Option or Mtn Orbit Load Option in the same set so the defense has to respect both motion looks and cannot key on the option concept alone.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, work the drag and flat routes underneath quickly before the flat defender can widen and close the window.
