Bounce HB Power is a gap scheme run play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that pulls the backside guard (or fullback surrogate blocker) to lead through the play side edge, giving the HB a bounce-outside option if the interior gets clogged. The line uses down blocks and a kickout from the pulling blocker to create a wall, while the HB reads the playside tackle and pulling blocker to decide whether to press downhill or bounce it wide. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is: press the hole created by the down blocks first, then bounce outside off the puller's kickout block if the edge defender or force player gets sealed or overextends.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the play side defensive end or outside linebacker crashing down hard, since that is exactly the trigger for the HB to bounce outside the kickout block. Check linebacker depth pre-snap, stacked or blitzing linebackers who are cheating downhill will get gashed if the pulling blocker connects on the edge. Identify one-high safety shells (Cover 1 or Cover 3) as prime bounce lanes since the extra run defender is usually removed from the edge in those shells. Two-high shells with the safety rotating down as a force player on the edge shut this play down fast, so be ready to check to a different concept if you see that rotation before the snap. Watch for a user-controlled defender flashing down early off the edge, that is a sign the defense is keying the pulling blocker and jumping the bounce lane, so cutting back inside behind the down blocks becomes the better answer.

Usage Tips

Use this against defenses showing light boxes with five or fewer defenders in the box since the pulling blocker can seal the edge cleanly against fewer bodies.

Motion the HB or check the play side alignment pre-snap to confirm there is no extra run support rotating down from the safety, since an extra hat outside kills the bounce lane.

User the pulling blocker at the mesh point to manually finish the kickout block on the edge defender, this often decides whether the bounce lane stays open.

Pair this with Bounce X Spot and Bounce RPO Read Bubble in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the interior power look and the perimeter bounce, keeping linebackers honest and slowing their fast flow.
