The backside single receiver runs a deep dig back across the field while the other outside receiver works an out breaking route. This is a man beater and Cover 2 beater built specifically for the red zone, since the crossing routes create natural rub picks against tight man coverage and the corner route climbs into the void behind a Cover 2 cornerback squatting on the flat. The primary read progression starts with the corner route off the scissors action, then works down to the crossing shallow underneath, and finally over to the backside dig if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the corner is playing outside leverage or inside leverage. Outside leverage corners get beat easily by the scissors crossing action. Watch for two deep safeties indicating Cover 2 or Cover 4. This play is designed to exploit the seam between the flat defender and the deep safety on the corner route. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the shallow crosser. If he sits and reads the quarterback instead of running with the route, expect a jump on the drag route. This play struggles against a hard Cover 3 buzz where the flat defender sinks quickly and the corner has help underneath, since it clogs both levels of the scissors concept. Beware of a user lurking in the shallow crossing lane. A smart user defender sitting in that throwing window can jump the underneath route and turn it into a pick six.

Usage Tips

Call this near the goal line or inside the 15 yard line since the corner route needs to win vertically before running out of real estate.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. If you see two high safeties sitting deep in Cover 2 or Cover 4, trust the corner route since it is designed to split the seam between the corner and safety.

Against man coverage, let the crossing rub at the top of the stem do the work. Hot route the underneath crosser to sit down for a split second if the defender is trailing tight to create separation.

Pair this with Tear RZ Crossers or Corner Strike in the same set to keep defenders guessing between crossing action and true corner breaks, forcing zone defenders to widen their drops.

On third and short in the red zone, use this as a play-action complement out of the same formation to freeze linebackers before the ball is snapped for real on this play.
