Defensive Reads

Key on the backside cornerback, if he sits low in a zone drop the vertical route on the backside can be an explosive answer against Cover 3. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 Man looks that put extra bodies underneath, since the flat and out routes can get squeezed by disciplined zone drops. Watch for a linebacker blitzing off the orbit motion side, since the play-action fake can leave the offensive line vulnerable to a fast edge rusher if the protection does not account for the extra defender.

Usage Tips

Use the orbit motion to identify if the defense is in man or zone before the snap, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely seeing man coverage and can lean on the corner route to win one on one.

Look at the flat defender immediately after the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath flat and out combo will be wide open for an easy checkdown.

This play hits hard on third and medium to third and long since the spot concept naturally creates a high low read on the flat defender.

Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle or Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run action, making the play-action fake on this call more effective later.

If you see two deep safeties pre-snap, prioritize the corner route since Cover 2 defenders will have trouble getting over the top of it before the flat defender can help.

Hot route the backside vertical into a deep drag against Cover 3 if you need an extra underneath option versus a heavy zone drop.
