Defensive Reads

Key the safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shallow and creeping toward the box this play-action shot has a great chance to hit over the top. Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake the deep crosser will have a clean throwing lane across the middle. Identify man coverage by checking if the slot corner mirrors the receiver's release, since the Go route stacking into a corner is a strong man beater against tight coverage. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, since that defender can undercut the deep crosser if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 3 with a fast flowing middle linebacker can rally and close the window on the crosser, so be ready to reset to the Go route or the short out if that rotation shows.

Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel packages so the play-action fake actually freezes linebackers and safeties.

Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the deep crosser has room to work against Cover 3 or Cover 1 defenses that bite on the run fake.

If you see two high safeties, prioritize the crosser sitting down in the void between zone defenders rather than forcing the Go route into double coverage.
