Breakdown

Fade Stop is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off with 11 personnel that isolates the boundary corner with a hard fade while stacking a stop route underneath it on the same side. The backside runs a wheel/seam combo up the sideline, the slot on the fade side climbs a straight vertical seam, and the middle of the field gets a quick angle route out of the backfield that breaks up the seam for a check down. This is a man beater built around the fade winning one on one on the outside, but the stop route underneath gives you a built in answer if the corner sits on top of the fade, so the primary read starts outside with the fade jump ball, then works down to the stop, then to the backfield angle route as the checkdown against tight man or blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check the corner alignment on the fade side, tight press man alignment tells you the stop route underneath will be the easier throw once the corner turns his hips vertically. Watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, since the backfield angle route runner can get eaten alive by a user controlled defender sitting in that throwing lane. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre snap, expect the fade to be capped and the stop route to be the higher percentage answer against that soft zone shell. Post snap, key the flow of the backside seam and wheel combo, if the defense rotates a safety over the top late it usually means they are selling out to stop the fade and leaving the underneath stop and angle routes wide open. Beware of blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the backfield angle route becomes the emergency valve but only works if the quarterback has time to reset his eyes after the fade read.

Usage Tips

Use this in the red zone or on the goal line where the fade has a natural size or leverage advantage over the corner and the stop underneath gives you a built in rhythm throw if the fade window closes.

Before the snap identify if the corner is playing outside shade or inside shade, outside shade means throw the fade back shoulder, inside shade means the stop route will be wide open underneath.

If you see two deep safeties or a soft zone shell, hot route the backside seam runner into a quick out or bench the fade for the stop route since zone defenders will sit on the vertical shot.

Pair this with Mtn Stick or Angle Curls earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick underneath game, then come back to Fade Stop to attack a corner who is playing aggressive off those shorter reads.

Against man coverage on third and short or in the red zone, trust the fade one on one but always have your eyes ready to reset to the stop route if the user jumps the fade route with a safety.
