Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam is a play-action pass off a sweep fake from Shotgun Doubles Y Off, designed to freeze linebackers and attack the seam and vertical shots off the run fake. Both outside receivers run vertical routes up the numbers, the slot man in motion breaks into a corner route out of the backfield fake, and the TE releases up the seam behind the second level while the QB rolls off the sweep action. The primary read starts with the seam route on the TE (the red route hitting the void behind linebackers and in front of safeties), then works to the outside verticals if the safety cheats down to the seam, with the corner route from the motion man as a late checkdown against zone drops.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are shallow or one is stacked in the box expecting run support the seam route will have a clean throwing lane Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard to defend the sweep action you get a wide open throwing window to the seam before the second level can recover Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender spying the QB or sitting in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the seam route and will force you to the outside verticals This concept struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells where the safety stays disciplined over the top of the seam and the corner sinks with the vertical route Man coverage with underneath linebacker blitzes is where this play thrives, the play action hold delays the rush and the seam route wins quickly against man defenders trailing from depth
Run this on early downs in run-heavy personnel counts (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) so the play action sweep fake actually holds the linebackers and freezes run blitz keys
Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely seeing man coverage and should prioritize the seam route immediately
Against zone shells with two deep safeties, hold the seam throw a beat longer and let the TE sit down in the window between the linebacker drop and safety depth before pulling the trigger
Hot route the backside outside vertical into a comeback or hitch versus soft zone corners playing off coverage, this gives you a quick answer if the seam window is not there
Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle and PA Jet Sweep in the same personnel and formation to keep defenses guessing between run fits and vertical shot plays, then mix in RPO Zone Peek to punish linebackers who bite hard on the sweep fake
