Bounce X Spot is a Spot concept combined with a bounce-action outlet from Shotgun Doubles Y Off, giving you both a quick-game zone beater and a run-pass conflict for the flat defender. The X receiver runs the spot route underneath while the TE and slot work a flood or corner combo to occupy the deep zones, and the HB releases into the bounce path as a checkdown or screen-style outlet against overpursuit. Primary read starts with the flat or hook defender: if he sits on the spot, look to bounce the ball outside to the HB, and if he widens to the flat, hit the spot route settling in the void underneath the curl.
Watch the flat or curl-hook defender at the snap, if he squats on the spot route the HB bounce is open outside. Zone shells like Cover 3 and Cover 4 struggle to defend both the spot and the bounce action simultaneously, making this a strong zone beater. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the HB can shut this down quickly if he stays home and does not bite on the bounce fake. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone since a smart user can jump the spot route and force you to the bounce read. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the timing of the spot route, so identify pre-snap blitz alignment and be ready to check to the bounce or checkdown immediately.
Check the flat defender and curl-hook player before the snap since this play is designed to attack whichever one bites first.
Use this against zone-heavy defenses like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where the underneath defenders have to choose between the spot and the HB bounce.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage so you have a second option beyond the spot-bounce conflict.
Pair this with Bounce RPO Read Bubble or Bounce HB Power earlier in a series so the defense starts keying run and the flat defender widens too fast on Bounce X Spot.
Best called on second or third down with manageable yardage since the spot route sits in the sticks and the bounce action gives you an easy checkdown if the read is muddy.
Avoid this against aggressive man blitzes unless you have a hot route dialed to beat the extra rusher quickly.
