Breakdown

Mtn HB Base is the run-heavy foundation play out of the Doubles Y Off Shotgun set, designed around a Mountain motion action that shifts the HB pre-snap to create misdirection and hesitation from the front seven. This is a base run play with inside zone principles, using the motion to influence linebacker flow and open up a cutback lane behind zone or gap blocking up front. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team and combo blocks at the point of attack, then reads to the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues the motion flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and flow before the snap, if they are shaded to the motion side expect a fast flow defense that is vulnerable to the cutback. Identify the box count post-motion, if the defense adds a defender into the box (7 or 8 in the box) this run play loses its numbers advantage and you should check to a pass or RPO instead. Key the playside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, a strong crash means the cutback lane behind them will be wide open. Look for scrape exchange or a linebacker sitting on the cutback lane, disciplined defenses that do not overreact to motion can bottle this run up quickly. Beware of run blitzes and A-gap pressure from Cover 0 or Cover 1 man looks, since this play relies on double teams up front that can get beaten by a fast interior blitz before the double team is set.

Usage Tips

Use the Mountain motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction, then read the cutback lane if they overcommit to the flow side.

This play works best on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts or run-friendly zone shells.

Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle and Mtn PA Spinner from the same set so the defense has to respect the same motion look as both a run and a play-action threat.

If you see a defense keying hard on the motion, mix in Mtn Spinner HB Counter or Mtn Orbit Load Option to punish over-aggressive linebacker fills with counter action off the same shift.

Against stacked boxes or run blitzes, check to RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble from the same personnel to get a free access throw instead of forcing the run.
