Breakdown

Mtn RPO Alert Bubble Slant is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that pairs an inside run scheme with a bubble screen and a slant tag to one side, giving the quarterback a true alert read before the snap. This is a defense diagnosis tool more than a straight man or zone beater, since the QB reads the numbers in the box and the flow of the alley defender to decide between handing off, throwing the bubble, or hitting the slant. Primary progression starts with the box count and flat defender, then bubble receiver, then the slant as the alert breaker if the corner sinks or the defense rotates hard to the run.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap look at safety depth, if both safeties are stacked deep in a two high shell the box is lighter and the run read favors the handoff. Watch the flat or alley defender assigned to the bubble side, aggressive blitz or run fits leave him exposed to the bubble throw. Man coverage on the slant receiver with no underneath help is a green light to pull and throw since the slant sits in front of trail technique. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a hard flowing linebacker to the run side tell the QB to keep the ball since the numbers are even or in the offense favor. User controlled defenders sitting on the bubble route or lurking underneath the slant are the biggest threat, if you see a user spy near the flat abort to the run instead.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the run fit versus the number of blockers, if it is even or in your favor lean run.

Identify the alley or flat defender to the bubble side, if he crashes down on run action or sits too flat footed that is your bubble throw key.

Use the slant as your answer versus press man or when the corner jumps the bubble route, since the slant sits behind that leverage.

This play works best on early downs and in run heavy personnel counts where defenses are selling out to stop inside zone or gap runs.

Sequence this with Mtn HB Base or Mtn Stick out of the same formation so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick game before you hit them with the alert throw.
