Breakdown
Flood is a three-level stretch to one side of the formation designed to overload a single zone with a deep, intermediate, and short route stacked vertically. Out of the Shotgun Doubles Y Off set with 11 personnel, the concept sends the outside WR deep, the slot or Y running an out or corner at intermediate depth, and the HB or underneath receiver checking down to the flat, creating a high low read on the flat defender and a horizontal stretch on the deep third corner. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built to punish a single deep defender who cannot cover all three levels, and the primary read progression works deep to short: flood side deep route first, then the intermediate breaker, then the checkdown in the flat.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, locate the single high safety, if he shades hard to the flood side before the snap the defense may be sitting on this exact concept and you should expect aggressive corner route jumps. Post-snap, watch the flat defender first, if he widens with the checkdown route the intermediate out or corner route should sit down in the vacated window. Cover 3 with a hard corner squatting on the deep route is the main vulnerability, since the corner cannot both carry deep and defend the flat, forcing a numbers disadvantage. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can shut this down by doubling the deep route and rallying to the flat, so avoid forcing the deep shot if you see two safeties split pre-snap. Man coverage with an inside linebacker matched on the checkdown is exploitable, but watch for a disguised blitz where the slot defender walks up late, since that removes the intermediate defender and opens a lane for a quick user pick if not accounted for.
Usage Tips
Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, if you see a single high safety rotate toward the flood side to confirm Cover 3 before the snap.
Use motion to flush the defense and expose man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man you are looking at man coverage and should hot route the deep route into a quick slant or speed out to beat inside leverage.
On third and medium to long, trust the deep to short progression, do not rush the checkdown unless the flat defender jumps the intermediate route.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Slant or Slants earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back to Flood once you see them creeping up on shorter routes.
Against user linebackers who spy the flat, hold the ball an extra beat and let the deep route work behind the corner, since the flat defender vacating opens the intermediate window.
