Crossers out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off is a classic man beater built around two crossing routes that stretch the field horizontally at different depths. The two inside receivers cross underneath while the outside receivers on both sides run vertical clear routes to occupy deep coverage and remove cushion defenders from the middle of the field. Blocking is a standard 5-man protection with the back staying in to help, and the primary read progression starts with the deeper crosser working left to right before checking down to the shallow crosser sitting underneath as the second read.

Defensive Reads

Crossers beats man coverage hard because the natural pick action at the crossing point creates separation against any defender trailing in man technique. Cover 3 and other zone shells with underneath robber support can sit on the shallow crosser, so watch for a linebacker sinking into that lane and be ready to work the deeper crosser instead. Identify blitz packages pre-snap by checking linebacker depth, since crossers take time to develop and a hot underneath blitz will beat the protection before either route clears. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position over the middle of the field are the biggest threat to this concept, so bait them by looking off the deeper crosser first. Press man corners on the outside verticals can disrupt timing at the snap, which delays the clearing routes and gives extra time for zone defenders to close on the crossers underneath.

Use motion or a hot route on one of the vertical outside routes to a hitch if you see soft zone to give yourself a quicker underneath outlet against zone shells.

This play works best on second and medium to third and medium since both crossers need time to develop and clear the traffic in the middle of the field.

Pair this play in your call sheet with Mesh Outs or Mesh Out N Up so defenses cannot sit on the same crossing concept every snap.

Combine with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble on early downs to keep the defense guessing before unloading Crossers on a passing down when you expect man coverage.
