Mtn PA Y Screen is a play-action screen out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that uses a mountain motion fake to sell run action before releasing the tight end on a screen behind a wall of blockers. The offensive line and receivers sell run blocking paths to freeze linebackers and second level defenders, while the Y (tight end) slips out into the flat or shallow area for the screen release. The primary read progression is to trust the play-action fake first to gauge linebacker flow, then immediately look to the Y screen as the first and primary target since the concept is designed around that single release rather than a full route tree.
Identify if linebackers are keying run flow hard at the snap since that opens up the screen lane behind them. Check for man coverage on the tight end pre-snap since man defenders often follow the fake and lose contain on the screen release. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting flat footed in the middle of the field since disciplined defenders can read the screen and jump the throwing lane. Look for blitzing linebackers or edge defenders selling out on the play-action fake since this vacates the underneath area for the screen to develop. Beware of user controlled defenders staying home on the tight end rather than biting on the run fake, as this is the primary way defenses shut this play down.
Call this against aggressive linebacker flow teams that bite hard on run action or mountain motion fakes since the screen punishes downhill pursuit.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses expect run and load the box.
Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle, Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam, or Mtn Spinner HB Counter earlier in a drive so defenders key run action and commit hard, making the screen hit even bigger later.
Watch for blitz packages pre-snap since screens punish overpursuing edge rushers and blitzing linebackers who vacate their zone drops.
Avoid calling this against teams sitting in soft zone shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read since they can jump the screen lane easily.
