Angle Curls out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off pairs an angle route out of the backfield with curl routes from the outside receivers, giving the quarterback a layered read from the flat to the intermediate hook zones. The angle route from the HB is designed to beat man coverage by attacking linebackers in space, while the curl routes sit down in soft spots against zone coverage for an easy completion. This is a pass play built as a dual purpose man and zone beater, and the primary progression starts with the angle route out of the backfield before working to the curls if the underneath defender takes away the check down.
Defensive Reads
Watch the Mike and Will linebackers before the snap to see if they are aligned to cover the HB man to man or sitting in a zone drop, since the angle route exploits any linebacker without tight man coverage instincts. Check safety depth and shell type: a two high shell with soft zone drops invites the curl routes to settle in easily, while a single high shell with aggressive underneath linebackers can jump the angle route if the user flows downhill immediately at the snap. Look for a user controlled defender spying the backfield or shading toward the angle route release, which signals the defense has identified this as a known man beater. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the angle route if the linebacker sinks late, so be ready to climb the progression to the curls if that throwing lane closes. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the biggest threat since the protection is not built to hold up long, forcing a rushed decision on the angle read.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second or third and medium when the defense is likely to sit in an underneath zone shell like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with soft corners playing off the curl routes. Read the Mike linebacker pre-snap: if he shows man coverage on the HB, expect the angle route to break wide open against any linebacker without elite man coverage grades. If you see a two high safety shell with corners playing tight press, hot route one curl into a corner or out route to attack the sideline before the safety can rotate down. Sequence this play with Slants or RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series so the defense starts jumping the quick underneath throws, then hit them with the angle route out of the backfield once linebackers start cheating toward the line of scrimmage. Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the angle route quickly since the protection is built for a five step drop and will break down against extra rushers.
