Defensive Reads

Identify man coverage by checking if the defender across from the option route mirrors the receiver's release, this tells you the route will likely convert to a comeback against tight coverage. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells struggle against this concept since the option route finds the soft spot between the underneath and deep zone defenders. Man coverage with a deep safety help over the seam can shut this down if the linebacker covering the option route stays disciplined and does not bite on the initial stem.

Usage Tips

Check the middle of the field pre snap, if you see a single high safety the option route will have room to sit down against man coverage since the underneath defender has to respect the vertical stem first.

Against off man coverage, hot route the option route to a shallow drag or keep it as is and let it settle against zone since the route naturally converts based on the leverage it sees.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the option route conversion gives you a built in check down against both man and zone without needing to force the ball deep.

Pair this with Mtn Stick or Y-sail from the same set so the defense has to respect both a quick option concept and a traditional stick concept, keeping linebackers honest on their zone drops.

If the defense shows blitz pre snap, get the ball out on the option route quickly since the hitch and seam combo takes longer to develop and the protection may not hold up against extra rushers.
