Mtn Sail is a sail (flood) concept out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that stretches one side of the field high to low. The Y (TE) runs a corner route while a receiver settles underneath on a flat or shallow route, with the backside working as a changeup, creating a natural triangle read for the quarterback. This is primarily a zone beater designed to attack Cover 3 and Cover 2 by overloading one flat zone defender with two or three vertical stems, though it also holds up against man coverage if the corner route wins on a leverage-based release. The primary read progression starts high with the corner route, then works down to the flat or shallow route underneath as the sail concept clears out space.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap since Cover 3 zone defenders are the most vulnerable to the sail flood, especially if the flat defender has to cover both the underneath route and the corner route. Watch the cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route too early you have a window underneath, if he sits flat you have space over the top. Key the flat or curl to flat defender after the snap, his positioning tells you whether to throw underneath or climb to the corner route behind him. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with capable deep quarter defenders since they can eliminate the corner route and force a checkdown, and watch for user blitzes off the edge since the sail concept takes time to develop and can be vulnerable to quick pressure.

Look at the corner and safety alignment before the snap to confirm if you are facing a two high or one high shell, since Mtn Sail is most effective versus single high zone coverage like Cover 3. If the flat defender sits on the underneath route, immediately climb your eyes to the corner route sitting behind him for the explosive gain. Use hot routes to convert the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, giving you a rhythm throw away from the flood concept. This play works best on second and medium to long distance situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz. Pair Mtn Sail with Mtn Stick or Mtn HB Base from the same set to keep the defense honest between quick game concepts and vertical flood shots, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.
