Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off that sells the outside sweep fake before working an angle route out of the backfield. Both outside receivers push vertical and break outward on comeback style routes to stretch the defense horizontally, while the inside route breaks hard away from the play action fake on the angle concept underneath. The blocking scheme mimics the sweep action to hold the edge defenders and linebackers before the QB looks to peel off the angle route as his primary read, with the two comeback routes serving as boundary man beaters if the underneath is covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth and flow pre-snap since aggressive run fits and downhill linebackers get exposed by the angle route out of the backfield. Key the cornerback alignment on the outside receivers since press man leaves them vulnerable to the comeback break. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender spying the angle route or sitting in a shallow zone drop, since that defender can jump the route if the QB is late. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, the underneath angle route sits in a natural soft spot if the flow follows the sweep fake. To shut this down, defenses should stay disciplined with linebackers, avoid overcommitting to the play action, and get a spy or hook zone defender to sit on the angle route.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when defenses are keyed on the run and expecting sweep or jet motion looks. Use the play action fake to freeze linebackers, then work the angle route as your first read since it exploits defenders biting on the run fake. If the defense shows man coverage, target the angle route against a linebacker mismatch in space. Against zone shells, look to the comeback routes on the outside since they settle in the void created by underneath zone drops. Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam and PA Jet Sweep earlier in a drive so the defense respects the run fake, making this angle concept even more effective later in the series.
