Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle is a play-action pass off a mountain sweep fake that holds the linebackers with run action before the QB pulls it back to throw. The two outside receivers run vertical breaking routes to the sideline (comeback/out breaks) to stretch the defense horizontally while the angle route out of the backfield works underneath as the checkdown against blitz pressure. Primary read progression starts with the angle route out of the backfield if the defense bites on the sweep fake or brings pressure, then works to the outside breaking routes if the underneath defenders sit and clog the middle.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the sweep fake and vacate the middle of the field, the angle route will be the first read and should be open immediately. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, single high (Cover 1 or Cover 3) leaves the intermediate area vulnerable to the angle route while two high shells force the QB to work the outside breaking routes instead. Man coverage on the outside receivers with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the comeback style breaks since the defender's momentum is carried downfield before the route snaps back. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk position underneath the angle route, this is the primary defensive answer that shuts down the easy read and forces the QB to hold the ball longer. Zone blitz packages that drop a defensive lineman into the shallow zone can jump the angle route timing, so be ready to move to the outside breaking routes as the checkdown if pressure comes off the edge.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you have already established the HB Sweep Wk or Mtn Spinner HB Counter to sell the run fake to linebackers and safeties.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties sitting deep and linebackers creeping toward the line for run support, this play will hit the angle route wide open in the void they leave behind.

Use the angle route as a built-in answer to blitz pressure since it releases quickly to the flat area and gives the QB a safety valve if the outside breaking routes are covered downfield.

Pair this play in a sequence with HB Toss or Bounce HB Power earlier in the drive so the defense keys on the sweep look and overcommits to the edge, opening up the play-action passing lanes.

Hot route the backside outside receiver into a shorter comeback if you are facing aggressive man coverage corners who like to jump routes, this gives the QB a quicker, safer completion outside the numbers.
