HB Mtn QB Blast is a designed QB run out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off with a pre-snap HB motion across the backfield to bring the running back into a lead blocker role. The diagram shows the QB taking the snap and following the motioned HB through the interior gap while the offensive line downblocks to seal the point of attack, with both outside receivers running off vertical stems to occupy the cornerbacks. This is a run play designed to exploit light boxes, and the primary read is the QB identifying the natural crease created by the down blocks and following the HB lead through the hole rather than reading any pass concept.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety to follow the HB motion, since that indicates man coverage principles or a spy assignment on the QB. Key the defensive line alignment after motion, if the front does not adjust gap responsibility you have a numbers advantage at the point of attack. Post-snap, user the middle linebacker or a safety and stay square in the alley to prevent the QB from getting to the second level untouched. Watch for edge defenders staying home instead of crashing down on the run fake, which signals the defense recognizes this as a designed QB run and not play-action. Straight man coverage with no extra run support in the box is the biggest green light, while a strong safety rotated down into the box pre-snap is the clearest sign to check away from this run.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap and only call this when you count six or fewer defenders in the box after motion adjusts the count in your favor.
Use the HB motion to bait linebackers into flowing wrong, since a defender that overplays the motion opens up the exact gap this play attacks.
Pair this with Mtn PA Sweep H-Angle and Mtn PA Sweep HB Seam in the same drive so the defense has to respect both the QB run action and the play-action sweep off the same motion look.
Best called on early downs or short yardage and goal line situations where defenders are more likely to sell out against outside runs or pass concepts.
Avoid this play against defenses showing heavy A-gap blitz looks since the interior lead block can get overwhelmed before the crease develops.
