Breakdown

Counter Y out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off is a gap counter run with the offensive line pulling to create a lead blocker into the point of attack, and the HB taking a counter step before pressing the hole behind the pulling guard. The diagram shows two outside receivers running vertical stems to hold corners and a safety deep, clearing the alley for the counter action underneath. This is a power run play designed to hit the edge or off-tackle with a lead blocker, not a man or zone beater passing concept, so the primary read is the HB reading the pulling lineman's block and picking the correct crease based on how the defensive front flows.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety or two deep safeties bailing out at the snap indicates the defense is more concerned with the vertical routes than stacking the box against the run. Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down inside at the snap, since disciplined edge players who stay home can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flowing hard to the play side lineman, since a smart user will try to shoot the gap the puller is vacating rather than reading blocks. This play struggles against interior blitzes and stacked fronts with linebackers already at the line of scrimmage, since there is no time for the counter action to develop before penetration arrives. Look for over-pursuit from linebackers reading the initial counter step, since a disciplined defense staying square and reading the pulling guard can string this run out to the sideline for a minimal gain.

Usage Tips

Use this play when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the counter action and pulling guard need numbers advantage to spring the HB.

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: if the linebackers are crashed downhill or stacked tight to the line, they can beat the pulling blocker to the hole, so consider checking to Inside Zone instead.

Manually control the pulling lineman for a split second after the snap to manually seal the first threat off the edge, then release control back to the HB for the cutback read.

Pair this play with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Alert Counter Bubble in the same set so the defense has to respect both the zone run action and the counter footwork, slowing down linebacker flow.

Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to establish gap scheme runs and set up boot or play-action passes later in the series.
