Tear Speed Option is a run-based option play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off, built to attack the edge with a speed option pitch relationship between the QB and HB. The offensive line and TE work zone steps toward the playside edge while the QB reads the first unblocked defender off the edge to decide whether to keep the ball on a track outside the tackle box or pitch to the HB running the option path. This is a run-first play with option elements rather than a true RPO, and the primary read progression is simply the edge defender: attack downhill if he crashes on the QB, pitch outside if he sits or squeezes to take away the keep.
Watch the defensive end or edge rusher assigned to the QB in the option look. If he sits and waits, pitch immediately before the flow defenders can rally. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the linebacker takes the pitch man and the end crashes the QB. This is the primary counter to speed option and should force a quick keep read. Check safety depth pre-snap. Rolled up safeties near the box signal extra run support and make the edge tougher to turn the corner on. Look for user-controlled defenders flying downhill off the snap. Aggressive human defenders often overcommit to the QB, leaving the pitch lane wide open for the HB. Against contain-and-spill defensive fronts, expect the end to funnel the play inside to pursuit, so have a plan to cut back rather than forcing the ball outside.
Run this out of 11 personnel on early downs or third and short when the defense is showing base fronts, since a light box makes the edge read much easier to diagnose.
Check the alignment of the defensive end or edge rusher pre-snap. If he is crashing hard on run downs in your league, that is a green light to pitch quickly rather than test the keep.
Motion or shift the TE if your version of the set allows it to force the defense to declare run fits before the snap, which speeds up your post-snap decision on the option read.
Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set to keep defenders honest, since they will start crashing down to stop the speed option and open up quick throws behind them.
Avoid calling this into heavy blitz packages with extra defenders stacked on the edge, since the numbers advantage disappears and the pitch lane gets clogged.
