Breakdown

Mtn PA Wave is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles Off Close Wk designed to punish linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake. The backfield action holds down defenders while the route concept builds in a deep wave breaking across the field paired with an underneath crosser and a flat option, giving you a true shot play with a built-in safety valve. This is a man beater at its core since the crossing traffic creates natural rub separation, but it also stresses zone defenders who have to widen and cover the deep intermediate window. Primary read progression starts with the deep wave route working across the field, then works down to the crossing route sitting in the middle voids, and finally checks down to the flat or checkdown option if the shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow at 8 to 10 yards he is likely keying the run fake and will be late reacting to the wave route breaking behind him. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they step up hard on the play action fake that confirms zone or man run support and opens the crossing window immediately. Against Cover 3 look for the flat defender to widen with the crosser, this creates a natural throwing lane behind him for the wave route continuing across the field. Man coverage with a single high safety is the best matchup since the crossing traffic forces defenders to fight through picks, but be wary of a user controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or spying the crosser since they can jump the route late. Blitz heavy fronts and nano blitz packages are the biggest threat here because the deep wave needs time, if you see extra rushers showing pre-snap have your checkdown or flat option locked in as your first read instead.

Usage Tips

Sell the play action by holding your run fake through the animation before your eyes go downtown, this manipulates linebacker run fits and freezes second level defenders long enough to open the wave route. Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are more likely to respect inside zone tendencies from this personnel grouping. Hot route the underneath crosser to a sit or spot route against zone shells if you see two high safeties refusing to bite, this gives you a quicker outlet against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells. Pair this play in sequence with Mtn RPO Read Bubble or Mtn RPO Peek Slant earlier in a series to establish run and bubble tendencies, then hit Mtn PA Wave once the defense starts crashing down on run keys. Save this for third and medium or shot situations where you have a clean pocket plan since the deep wave takes time to develop and needs protection from edge pressure.
