PA Y Cross runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Doubles Off Close Wk that holds linebackers with the run fake before attacking the middle of the field. The Y (TE) runs the deep crossing route from one side of the formation all the way across the field, while a second receiver runs a shallow dig underneath that crosser to occupy the intermediate zone, and the backside receiver runs a deep comeback or fade to stretch the defense vertically. The RB stays in to help with pass protection off the play fake, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his reads. This is a man beater at its core, since the deep crosser creates natural separation against man defenders forced to trail across traffic, though the layered shallow route also gives you a answer versus zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the Y crosser, works down to the underneath dig if the crosser is taken away, and comes back to the comeback route on the backside as a late-window checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Read the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are sitting shallow and crashing on run action, that confirms they will bite on the play-action fake and open up the crossing lane. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since single high (Cover 3 or Cover 1) leaves the deep crosser vulnerable to a spy or lurking linebacker in the middle third. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or spying the crosser's path, since that lurk threat is the biggest way this play gets shut down in competitive play. Post-snap, key the corner over the backside receiver: if he sinks into a deep zone drop instead of playing man, the comeback route becomes a low-value checkdown rather than a big play. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the Y crosser clears traffic, so watch for overload blitzes to the play-action side that force a quick, inaccurate throw.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second-and-medium when linebackers are sitting on run keys, since the play-action fake needs a run threat to actually hold second level defenders.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties with soft corners, the Y crosser will have a clean throwing lane once it clears the linebacker level.
If the defense shows man coverage with a slot corner shadowing the TE, hot route the underneath dig into a quicker option to beat the trail technique before the crosser fully develops.
Pair this with Inside Zone or Y Lead Read Option from the same set so the run fake actually threatens the defense before you call PA Y Cross, then mix in RPO Read Bubble to keep linebackers guessing between run and pass keys.
Against aggressive blitz looks, get the ball out on the shallow route quickly since the deep crosser takes time to develop and the RB may not be enough protection versus a five or six man rush.
