Breakdown

X Dagger from Doubles Off Close Wk in Shotgun runs the classic dagger combo on the play side: the outer receiver clears out with a vertical seam while the inner slot receiver sits down on a deep dig that crosses underneath the seam route, creating a natural high low read against zone or a pick situation against man. On the backside, the tight end runs a corner route stretching that half of the field vertically, and the running back releases outside into a flat route as a check down and screen valve. This is a man and zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by clearing out the underneath zone with the seam so the dig sits down in the vacated window, with the primary read progression going from the deep dig to the backside corner to the flat as the check down.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the slot receiver since soft corners and deep safeties confirm a zone shell that this dig and seam combo is designed to shred. Post-snap, watch the middle linebacker or user controlled defender dropping into the deep middle hole because that lurk defender can jump the dig route if the quarterback holds it too long. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, the seam route occupies that safety and opens the dig behind the linebackers, so react quickly once the dig clears the second level. Man coverage on the outside receiver with no safety help over the top is exposed on the seam route, so an aggressive corner playing tight technique invites a big play down the field. Watch for a nano blitz or edge pressure package since the running back stays in as a flat release and check down, and if both interior blockers get beat quickly the quarterback will need to dump it off before the dig fully develops.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high because this play is built specifically to punish Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells with the dig sitting behind the underneath defenders.

If you see man coverage on the slot receiver, the dig route becomes a pick style man beater against the seam runner, so hold the throw a half second longer to let the natural rub develop.

Use the running back flat route as your outlet against pressure or when the middle linebacker sinks deep enough to take away the dig throwing window.

Pair this play with Double Post or Mtn Stick X Replace earlier in a series so defenders start jumping the deep dig, then come back to X Dagger to hit the corner route or flat if they overplay the middle.

Best called on second or third and medium to long since it takes time to develop the deep dig and corner routes fully, so protect the quarterback with max protect or a quick check down plan versus known blitz teams.
