Defensive Reads

Man coverage shells with the slot defender pressed or shaded inside are vulnerable to the bubble because there is no underneath help, while zone shells with a defender sitting flat in the bubble lane shut the pass window down. Blitzes that send extra defenders off the edge or through the A gap create a numbers advantage for the bubble since the perimeter defender often has run responsibility first, so respect the pull read against pressure looks. If the defense shows a heavy box with the safety cheating down pre-snap, expect the linebacker flow to be run-focused and prioritize the bubble throw before he can redirect.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a two-high or single-high shell because light boxes with six or fewer defenders favor pulling the run, while stacked boxes with a walked-up nickel or safety in the flat favor throwing the bubble immediately.
Use your quarterback slide or hot route on the backside receiver sparingly since the bubble read is already built in, but consider motioning the slot pre-snap to get a free look at man versus zone leverage.
This play punishes teams that spin down safeties into the box to stop the run, so call it on early downs after you have shown inside zone or Y Lead Read Option to condition the defense into crashing the alley defender.
On third and short, favor the run side of the RPO against aggressive fronts, but on third and medium lean toward the bubble against teams that widen their linebackers to take away the perimeter.
Sequence this play with RPO Read Bubble and Counter Y in the same set so the defense cannot key on a single conflict defender, keeping the run fit honest possession after possession.
