Mtn Stick X Replace runs a classic Stick concept out of Shotgun Doubles Off Close Wk with pre-snap motion shifting the backfield alignment before the snap. The outside receiver to the closed side runs a vertical seam up the sideline while the TE/slot works a corner route breaking hard to the numbers, stacking a two-level stretch on that side. Underneath, the inside receiver runs a quick pivot/hitch replacing the vacated area while the running back releases into a flat route, giving the QB a triangle read from flat to stick to seam. This is a man beater at its core, built to punish underneath man coverage on the pivot and exploit leverage with the corner and seam routes over the top, with the primary read progression starting at the flat/replace route, then working to the stick, then climbing to the corner and seam.
Watch the cornerback over the motion receiver, if he trails across the formation you are facing man coverage and the pivot replace route becomes an immediate answer against inside leverage. Identify the safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the seam route signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which favors the underneath flat and pivot combo since the seam will be capped. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker responsible for the flat zone, if he sinks with the seam route or bites on the pivot, the running back's flat route should be wide open. Beware disguised Cover 2 shells where the corner sits on the flat and squeezes the pivot route, in this look you need to climb the progression quickly to the corner route breaking outside before the safety rotates over. Look out for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone anticipating the pivot route, a heavy blitz look combined with a lurking linebacker can jump this route so be ready to reset to the seam or throw it away.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation it confirms man coverage and opens up the pivot replace route as an easy completion.
Against zone shells, key the flat defender first since the running back's flat route and the pivot route occupy the same underneath zone, forcing a defender to choose and opening a throwing lane.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see Cover 2 shells rolling toward the play, this keeps the play balanced and gives you an answer versus deep half coverage that squeezes the corner route.
This play pairs well with X Dagger and Double Post in the same set since both attack vertically off similar formation looks, keep defenses guessing by alternating between the quick underneath stick concept here and the deeper shots those plays offer.
Call this on second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage, the quick pivot and flat combo gives you a high floor conversion option while the seam and corner give explosive play upside.
