Inside Zone from Shotgun Doubles Off Close Wk is a zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB, taking the handoff and pressing the inside gap based on the zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line executes a zone slide, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers, giving the runner a one cut and go read. The primary read progression is the playside combo block: identify whether the double team gets movement, then decide between the bend, bang, or bounce lane based on how the linebackers flow.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive tackles shooting gaps rather than reading blocks, which signals a gap or penetration scheme designed to blow up zone runs. Stacked linebackers at the second level with tight alignment usually mean fast flow to the mesh point, so be ready to user the closest defender to the playside gap. Look for safeties creeping into the box pre-snap, which indicates run support and can shut down the cutback lane if you do not identify it early. Nickel or dime packages with lighter boxes are prime opportunities to attack downhill since fewer bodies means less gap integrity. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with edge defenders crashing hard, expect the cutback lane to open since pursuit angles will overrun the play.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm you have enough blockers to run inside zone effectively against the front. Check linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expect a fast fill and be ready to bounce the run outside. This play works best on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, where defenses are not selling out to stop the pass. Pair Inside Zone with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Zone Read Bubble from the same set so defenses cannot key run without conceding the bubble screen. Mix in Y Lead Read Option after a few Inside Zone reps to keep second level defenders honest and slow down linebacker triggers.
